Hare's Ear Nymph

#12–16 · Natural / Gold bead

A general-purpose nymph. A fair first fly when you are not sure what the fish are eating.

Frenchie

#14–18 · Copper wire rib

Slim profile for clearer water or selective fish.

Perdigon

#12–16 · Olive / Brown

Heavy bead gets to the bottom fast in higher flows.

Stonefly Nymph

#8–12 · Black / Brown, heavy

Big meal for big fish. Fish along the bottom in fast runs.

Zebra Midge

#18–22 · Black/silver or red/silver

Small and slim for low, clear water.

Woolly Bugger

#4–8 · Olive, Black, Brown

Grand River standard. Olive in normal conditions, black in stained.

Zonker

#4–8 · Chartreuse/White or Olive/White

Excellent in slightly elevated or stained water.

Clouser Minnow

#2–6 · Pink/White, Chartreuse/White

Dumbbell eyes get it down fast. Strip and pause it through pools and runs.

Elk Hair Caddis

#14–16 · Tan / Olive

Evening staple. Caddis hatches reliable May–September.

Sulphur Comparadun

#14–16 · Yellow / Orange

Match the evening sulphur hatch May–July. Low-riding profile.

Royal Wulff

#12–14 · Classic attractor

High-floating. Also works as a dry-dropper indicator.

Blue Winged Olive

#16–20 · Olive / Grey

Classic dry during overcast afternoons. Match the dun hatch in April–June and again in September.

Rapala Original Floating

4–7 cm · Firetiger, Perch, Rainbow

Classic crankbait for river browns. Perch in clear water, firetiger in stained.

Blue Fox Vibrax Spinner

#3–5 · Silver / Gold blade

Silver in clear conditions, gold in stained. Slow retrieve in cold.

Kastmaster Spoon

1/4–3/8 oz · Silver, Gold

Gets deep fast. Work it through pools and current seams near structure.

Mepps Aglia Spinner

#3–4 · Black/Yellow, Natural

Classic trout spinner. Consistent in all flows through seams.

Roe Bag

Small mesh sacs · Natural or cured

The most effective float fishing bait in Ontario rivers. Match the size to the flow: smaller in low, clear water and larger in high, stained water.

Soft Bead

10–12 mm · Pink, Peach, Natural

Highly effective for steelhead and salmon. Peg 1–2 inches above hook. Pink in coloured water, natural/peach in clear.

Hard Bead

8–12 mm · Nuke Egg colours

Top producer, especially in clear water. Peg 1–2 inches above hook. Chartreuse and orange are the colours to start with.

Plastic Worm

3–4 inch · Red, Pink, Chartreuse

Thread onto hook and drift naturally. Red and pink for stained water, natural for clear.

Nightcrawler

Full or half · Natural

Classic bait for all trout species. Best in spring and after rain when naturals are washing in.

Bait rules vary by river, so check the current Ontario regulations before you fish.

Little Cleo Spoon

½–¾ oz · Orange/White, Gold/Red

Top producer at harbour mouths. Cast across the current and retrieve slowly, letting it flutter on the drop.

Kastmaster Spoon

¾ oz · Gold, Chrome

Heavy for distance casting from piers. Fan cast and vary retrieve depth. Gold in low light, chrome in bright.

Rapala Jointed Minnow

J11 · Firetiger, Silver

Cast parallel to the pier or shoreline. Twitch and pause it. Salmon key on the jointed action at low speed.

Blue Fox Vibrax

#5 · Silver/Chartreuse, Gold

Best in overcast conditions or dawn. Slow to medium retrieve just below the surface near the river plume.

Mepps Aglia

#4–5 · Silver, Gold

Lighter option for calmer harbour water. Good when fish are finicky, because the slower blade triggers less aggressive fish.

Fishing a harbour mouth? Check the regulations for seasonal closures near river mouths.
